La Ruta Maya [Guatemala and Belize]:
On this 11 day tour of Guatemala's best sights we visit the madly colourful market of Chichicastenango; travel to the shores of gorgeous Lake Atitlan flanked by three volcanoes; stay in ancient colonial, ruined Antigua and rent mountain bikes to explore the countryside; then we fly to Peten and take a tour around the jungle-shrouded, monkey-surrounded pyramids of Tikal.
Next day it's a flight to Belize to our jungle retreat next to Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve; a paddle down the Macal River for an introduction to Belize wildlife, the guide helping us spot iguanas, peccaries, coatimundis and varied bird life, before exploring the Maya ruins of Xunantunich; another day gets us to more ancient Maya ruins - of Caracol, surrounded by creepy, buzzy jungle and a swim in Rio On Pools followed by large and spooky Rio Frio Cave.
Our final experience involves, crossing creeks and journeying deep into the Belizean jungle to the sacred the Cave of the Stone Sepulcher where we gear up with full caving outfits to splash our way to the spectacular chamber where kings and priests made blood sacrifices to appease Maya gods.
