Central Asia Overland [China - Kyrgyzstan - Uzbekistan]:
A 28 day tour. From Urumqi, capital of China's remote north-west, we journey to Kuqa and Aksu, staging posts on the Silk Road. We then venture forth into the Taklamakan Desert; taking the highway through the heart of this 'desert of no return'. Undiscovered riches lie within the desert, which is the resting place for many 19th Century European explorers. Eventually we emerge onto the southern silk road along which lie a belt of settlements, nestled between the desert and Pamir and Kunlun ranges.
Kashgar & Torugart Pass
Kashgar has been a Silk Road trading centre for over two millennia and we plan to absorb ourselves in this exotic ethnic mix at the fabled Sunday bazaar and livestock market. Leaving the heat of the Tarim Basin behind, our route starts to climb and wind as we venture up into the snow-capped Tien Shan mountains that separate China from Kyrgyzstan. Crossing the border and the legendary Torugart Pass [3752m], the scenery starts to change, the dry and desolate landscape giving way to forested mountains and lush steppe. In a beautiful hidden valley at Tash Rabat, we stay in a yurt camp next to the brooding ruins of an old fortified caravanserai. We have another taste of the nomadic life staying in the alpine pastures at Lake Song Kul.
Jewels Along the Silk Route
After sightseeing in Tashkent, we fly to the romantic city of Khiva. We explore the maze of twisting alleyways, medieval mosques, tombs and palaces before driving to the magical city of Bokhara. From Bokhara we turn off the highway and using bus and 4-wheel drive vehicles, reach our desert camp. We have time to ride camels in the desert; for the brave, there's a chance to swim in lake Aydarkul to cool off - an altogether invigorating experience! Two days are spent in Samarkand, the capital of Tamerlane's empire which contains some of Asia's most stunning architecture.
