Cyprus has been drawing visitors for 3,000 years. Most were drawn to the island's strategic position but even they couldn't fail to have been amazed by its natural beauty. No wonder Aphrodite the Goddess of Love is associated with the island. There are lofty mountains, fairytale castles, pretty harbours, shipwrecks, wild donkeys and ancient remains to discover as we explore on foot, 4WD, by bus and maybe even by donkey!

Cyprus is a large island in the eastern Mediterranean, 75km south of Turkey and north of Egypt. It's officially classified as Eurasian, in other words partly European - and a member of the European Union - partly Asian. Cyprus was a colony of the United Kingdom until independence in 1960, but the current political structure of the country is in dispute as one third of the island [the north] has been occupied by Turkish forces since 1974 while other two thirds is [Greek] Cypriot, with a UN green line dividing the sectors.
Cyprus has been at the crossroads of European/Asian/African trading and power struggles routes for thousands of years so relics - castles, temples, amphitheatres, palaces - of great civilisations of the past are scattered all over the island, including Mycenaeans, Phoenicians, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, English, French, Venetians, Ottomans, British.
Cyprus is the Mediterranean's third largest island after Sicily and Sardinia and the climate is typically Med, with hot dry summers and wet winters. Nicosia is the capital.
