Hammerhead sharks, Cocos Islands, Pacific: these bizarre creatures swarm in this part of the Pacific Ocean in October, a spectacular sight for serious scuba divers; a live-aboard boat is probably the best way to get close.

Wildlife on foot safaris: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. This undeveloped country specialises in walking safaris that allow tourists to get close to animals without having to bump around in a smelly truck. Best in October but also good July - September. Big game safari: Serengetti, Tanzania. A capacious wildlife refuge containing a large variety of animals, best in June/July at migration time but still fine in October. Avoid March-May [rains].
Ngorongoro Crater may be more lively than Serengetti apart from migration season. Best July-Oct. Worst March-May.

Big game, deserts and dunes: Etosha National Park, Namibia. Etosha is home to grunting masses of animals of all sorts with three fortified tourist camps in the middle of this rampant wildlife.

Wildlife safari: Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana, much of the Okavango Delta, with diverse habitats. Accommodation levels are high, as are costs. Transport is frequently by boat and all the big five animals should be present as well as thousands of birds. Best July-October or November - March for bird watching.
