Luang
Prabang, a view over the Mekong river.
Laos'
number one tourist attraction, Luang Prabang, is an enchanting place
surrounded by mountains, with the Mekong river lapping at its banks,
dilapidated French colonial buildings scattered throughout and dozens
of Buddhist temples, among them a handful of spectacular UNESCO listed
buildings.
In
the mornings at sunrise hundreds of monks file down the street collecting
alms, while at more reasonable times of day tribespeople from the
hills can be seen wandering to and from local markets.
The
town is a terrific base for trekking into the jungle, visiting hill
tribes, taking river trips, rafting, mountain biking or just chilling
out with a massage and a bit of shopping at the daily night market.
Luang
Prabang also connects with good nearby highways, making Vientiane,
Thailand and China about a day's drive away.
There's a great range of accommodation for all budgets and there are
many good, affordable restaurants as well as bars and even a couple
of dance clubs, though most of the town goes to bed early.
