Viterbo's walled medieval town, just an hour's drive from Rome.

Viterbo, provincial capital and one time home to varied Popes was a medieval fortress town and is still ringed by a massive wall, and contains a couple of worthwhile churches, palazzos, and a whole bunch of lions in every form. Just 15kms [10miles] away is the bizarre, 16thC Monster Park of Bomarzo.
Not as interesting as Lucca but Viterbo is an easy 1.2 hour ride by train from Rome's Stazione Trastevere.
