In 2001 Japanese researchers discovered that Machu Picchu is incredibly unstable, being built on the site of an old landslide.
The landslide is what made the site soil so fertile and introduced running water, thus making Machu Picchu ideal for
village developement. Unfortunately it also means that the village base is less than solid, currently moving downwards
at five inches per year, and ready to make a major move at the drop of a bowler hat.
