Rondinara beach photo, Corsica

Rondinara beach, between Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio. Good.

Heading north up the east coast from Bonifacio is an easy drive on the reasonably wide and straight N198, all the way to Bastia in the far north, two to three hours away. On the way the coastline is littered with excellent beaches, the best in Corsica and some would say in the Mediterranean. For more beach information and pictures see bugbog's Corsica Beaches page.

Porto Vecchio picture, Corsica

Porto Vecchio, a place to park your boat, sleep and eat; not much else. Disappointing.

The main stop between Bonifacio and Bastia, Porto Vecchio, although over 400 years old has little to offer except a tiny fortress, a marina for sailors and a comfortable base to enjoy the superb beaches both north and south of the port, though there are also plenty of little guest house and hotels nearer to the beaches. The Palombaggia and Santa Giulia beach areas, for example, are awash with tourist hotels.
Porto Vecchio is very popular with Italians during the summer season.

Genoese bridge, corsica picture

The Pont Genois on the way from Aleria to Corte. Good.

The next town on the N198, Aleria, dates from 564 BC and has a fine museum - the Jerome Carcopini - a Genoese fortress and an ancient Roman excavation to prove it. Apart from those, this is another Corsican [French?] town ruined by moronic, or corrupt, or both town planners. And there's more...

Hideous Corte 'burbs, Corsica

The view on entering historic Corte town by road from Aleria/Bonifacio. Disappointing.
Any suggestions on how to deal with French town planners in ten words or less?

nationalist graffiti image, Corsica

Well, yes. Corsican nationalists have some ideas, in spite of - or possibly because of - the billions of Euros pumped into Corsican development every year.

Corte citadel photo, Corsica

And finally, two hours drive from Bonifacio, or half an hour from north coast ports, Corte's old town, hub of both Corsican nationalism and the best hiking on the island. Good.
