The estate of Versailles, 15 minutes SW of Paris, stretches over 815 hectares, with landscaped gardens, ponds, fountains, canals, woodlands, farmyards and two small places, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon.
It's a relaxing and pretty place to spend a half day or more in fine weather, especially when the sound and light concerts are held on summer weekends. For those who are short of travel time or wobbly of leg there is a Palace Gardens tram service.
